About
Deborah lives in Bristol, Vermont, in the heart of the village where she has her studio and at-home gallery. She can look out her kitchen window and see Deer Leap Mountain, walk to the New Haven River and the grocery store, Shaw’s. When Deborah is not painting, she likes to walk in the woods, cook, garden, swim in fresh water, live music and travel to warm places in the winter. She loves spending time with her friend Steve, and her grown sons Cameron, Andrew, Sam and Lewis and her grandsons, Miles and Olen. It is the landscape of The Champlain Valley and the Northeast Kingdom that inspires her work. When she can, she loves being at her off-grid cabin in Craftsbury, Vermont.
Deborah graduated from Vassar College, where she studied history and fine art. She began painting full-time after teaching at a boarding school in northern New Hampshire. She has exhibited in galleries all around Vermont and currently has her work in the galleries listed on this site.
Deborah gets up early in the morning, drinks coffee, then works all day in her studio, painting, framing, and managing her business. She takes breaks to walk, do errands, deliveries, garden, feed the birds, read, pet her cats, and the ordinary tasks of daily living. By nine o’clock, she is in bed!
Artist's Statement
I have drawn and painted since childhood. It is simply what I like to do best. I paint every day in my studio at home. When it is warm enough, I paint on location which is the most fun because it is all right there - the light, the smells, and the color. I feel fortunate to live in Vermont. The rural landscape truly inspires me. I love painting mountains, farms, flowers, buildings, animals and water. I try to capture the essence of a place in my paintings. I paint on 140 lb. Arches Hot Press Watercolor paper; it is very smooth and allows for fine detail. I use Winsor-Newton Watercolors, and a blend of sable and synthetic brushes. The acrylagouache (Holbein) paintings are painted on gessoed birch plywood.
